1 Peter 3:17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that
you suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. Every Christian is bound to answer and apologize for the hope that is
in him. Christians should have a reason ready for their Christianity, that it may appear they are not actuated either by folly
or fancy. This defence may be necessary more than once or twice, so that Christians should be always prepared to make it,
either to the magistrate, if he demand it, or to any inquisitive Christian, who desires to know it for his information or
improvement. These confessions of our faith ought to be made with meekness and fear; apologies for our religion
ought to be made with modesty and meekness, in the fear of God, with jealousy over ourselves, and reverence to our superiors.
There are three basic kinds of suffering, all of which can
bring about much pain and discomfort to the believer.
1 Physical suffering. This, of course, occurs when a part
of our body is injured or begins to malfunction, resulting in a disharmony between it and the rest of the body. Several
factors can be involved in physical suffering. It can be caused by an accident or by carelessness (2 Samuel 4:4 And
Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan
out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became
lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. He was but five years old when his father and grandfather were killed. His
nurse, hearing of the Philistines' victory, was apprehensive that, in pursuit of it, they would immediately send a party to
Saul's house, to cut off all that pertained to it, and would especially aim at her young master, who was now next heir to
the crown. Under the apprehension of this, she fled with the child in her arms, to secure it either in some secret place where
he could not be found, or in some strong place where he could not be got at; and, making more haste than good speed, she fell
with the child, and by the fall some bone was broken or put out, and not well set, so that he was lame of it as long as he
lived, and unfit either for court or camp. See what sad accidents children are liable to in their infancy, the effect of which
may be felt by them, to their great uneasiness, all their days. Even the children of princes and great men, the children of
good men, for such a one Jonathan was, children that are well tended, and have nurses of their own to take care of them, yet
are not always safe. What reason have we to be thankful to God for the preservation of our limbs and senses to us, through
the many perils of the weak and helpless state of infancy, and to own his goodness in giving his angels a charge concerning
us, to bear us up in their arms, out of which there is no danger of falling ). It can be due to birth deformities
(John 9:1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. The condition of this poor man
was very sad. He was blind, and had been so from his birth. If the light is sweet, how melancholy must it needs
be for a man, all his days, to eat in darkness! He that is blind has no enjoyment of the light, but he
that is born blind has no idea of it. Methinks such a one would give a great deal to have his curiosity satisfied
with but one day's sight of light and colours, shapes and figures, though he were never to see them more. Why is the
light of life given to one that is in this misery, that is deprived of the light of the sun, whose way is
thus hid, and whom God hath thus hedged in? Let us bless God that it was not our case. The eye is one
of the most curious parts of the body, its structure exceedingly nice and fine. In the formation of animals, it is said to
be the first part that appears distinctly discernible. What a mercy is it that there was no miscarriage in the making of ours!
Christ cured many that were blind by disease or accident, but here he cured one that was born blind. ). It can
result from internal disinternal disorders (Luke 8:43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had
spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any The nature of her disease was such that
she did not care to make a public complaint of it (it was agreeable to the modesty of her sex to be very shy of speaking of
it), and therefore she took this opportunity of coming to Christ in a crowd; and the more people were present the more
likely she thought it was that she should be concealed. Her faith was very strong; for she doubted not
but that by the touch of the hem of his garment she should derive from him healing virtue sufficient for her
relief, looking upon him to be such a full fountain of mercies that she should steal a cure and he not miss it.
Thus many a poor soul is healed, and helped, and saved, by Christ, that is lost in a crowd, and
that nobody takes notice of. The woman found an immediate change for the better in herself, and that her disease was cured).
Finally, physical suffering may actually be caused by Satan (Job 2:7 So went Satan forth from the presence
of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. The disease with
which Job was seized was very grievous: Satan smote him with boils, sore boils, all over him, from head to foot, with
an evil inflammation (so some render it), an erysipelas, perhaps, in a higher degree. One boil, when it is gathering,
is torment enough, and gives a man abundance of pain and uneasiness. What a condition was Job then in, that had boils all
over him, and no part free, and those as of raging a heat as the devil could make them, and, as it were, set on fire of
hell! The small-pox is a very grievous and painful disease, and would be much more terrible than it is but that we know
the extremity of it ordinarily lasts but a few days; how grievous then was the disease of Job, who was smitten all over with
sore boils or grievous ulcers, which made him sick at heart, put him to exquisite torture, and so spread themselves over him
that he could lie down no way for any ease. If at any time we be exercised with sore and grievous distempers, let us not think
ourselves dealt with any otherwise than as God has sometimes dealt with the best of his saints and servants. We know not how
much Satan may have a hand (by divine permission) in the diseases with which the children of men, and especially the children
of God, are afflicted, what infections that prince of the air may spread, what inflammations may come from that fiery serpent.
We read of one whom Satan had bound many years. Should God suffer that roaring lion to have his will against any of us, how
miserable would he soon make us! ; Luke 13:16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath
bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? "She is a daughter of Abraham,
in a relation to whom you all pride yourselves; she is your sister, and shall she be denied a favour that you grant
to an ox or an ass, dispensing a little with the supposed strictness of the sabbath day? She is a daughter of Abraham,
and therefore is entitled to the Messiah's blessings, to the bread which belongs to the children.")
