The arrival at Golgotha (Matthew 27:33) and when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is
to say, a place of a skull. The offer of the stupefing drink refused (Matthew 27:34) they gave vinegar to drink mingled
with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. Jesus is crucified between two thieves (Matthew
27:35-38) And they crucified him and parted his garments, casting lots that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
by the prophet. They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched
him there,
He utters the first cry from the cross, "Father forgive them for they know not what thay
do," (Luke 23:34). The Jews mock Jesus (Matthew 27:39-43) And they that passed by reviled him,
wagging their heads, And saying Thou that destroyed the temple, and built it in three days, save yourself. If you be
the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders said,
He saved others; himself he cannot save. If He be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will
believe him. He "trusted in God; let him deliver him now; if he will have him: foe he said, I an the Son of God.
The thieves rail on Him, but one repents and believes (Matthew 27:44) The theives also, which were crucified with him,
cast the same in his teeth.
The second cry from the cross , "Today shall you be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43).
The third cry, "Woman behold your son" Then he said
to the disciple "Behold your mother." (John 19:26-27). The darkness (Matthew
27:45) Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
The fourth cry "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? which is to say, My God, My God, why
have you forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46)
The fifth cry, "I thirst" (John 19:28).
The sixth cry. "It is finished" (John 19:30).
The seventh day, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit:" (Luke
23:46) Our Lord dismisses His spirit (Matthew 27:30) And they spit on Him and took the reed, and smote Him on the
head.
These accounts supplement, but do not contradict each other, none of the Evangelists
quotes the entire inscription. All have "The King of the Jews." Luke adds to this the further words, "This
is." Matthew quotes the name "Jesus"; While John gives the additional words "of Nazareth."
The narratives combined give the entire inscription; "This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." Literally
"dismissed his spirit." The Greek, implies and act of will. This expression taken with (Mark 15:37;
Luke 23:46; John 19:30), differentiates the death of Christ from all other physical death. He died by His own violition
when He could say of His redemptive work, "It is finished." No man takes it from me, but I lay
it down of myself" ( John 10:18).
The veil which was rent was the veil which divided the holy place into which the priests
entered into the holy of holies into which only the high priests may enter on the day of atonement (Exodus 26:31) And
you shall make a veil of blue and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall
it be made: The rending of that veil, which was a type of human body of Christ (Hebrew 10:20) By a new and living
way, which he has consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; signified that a "new and living
way" was opened for all believers into the very presence of God with no other sacrifice or priesthood save Christ's (Hebrew
9:1-8) Then truly the first covenant had ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. For there was
a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is call the sancturary.
And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; WHich had the golden censer, and the ark of
the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, andAaron's rod that budded, and the
tables of the covenant; and over it cheribims of glory shadowing the mercyseat of which we cannot now speak, particularly.
Now when these things were ths ordained, the priest went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.
But into the second went the high priests alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for
the errors of the people. The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest,
while as the first tabernacle was still standing. (Matthew 27:52) And the graves were opened; and many bodies
of the saints which slept arose. That these bodies returned to their graves is not said and may not be inferred.
The wave sheaf (Leviticus 23:10-12) Speak unto the children of Isreal, and say unto them, When you come into the land
which I give to you, and shall reap the harvest there, than you shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest
unto the priest: And he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord; to be accepted for you; on the morrow after the sabbath
the priest shall wave it: And you shall offer that day when you wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first
year for a burnt-offering unto the Lord. This typifies the resurrection of Christ (John 12:24)
"Verily, Verily I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone, but if it die, it brings
forth much fruit." it was a sheaf which came forth in resurrection. The inference
is that these saints, with the spirits of "just men made perfect". ( Hebrew 12:23) To the general assembly
and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just
men made perfect, from paradise; went with Jesus (Ephesians 4:8-10) Wherefore he said, When he ascended up on
high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that also descended first into
the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill
all things. into heaven. |
